When I initially journeyed into photography, I had no intention to work with newborns. My initial fear was simply the unknown and what I thought I ‘had’ to do vs. what I would WANT to do. I knew I didn’t want to pose children, dress them up, stick them in props with elaborate setups (not that there is anything wrong with any of that…it’s just not what I wanted). So I went on my merry way of working as a family photographer and capturing real, in the moment interactions and emotions and loved it! Eventually, some of my family client clients would add to those amazing families and ask me about newborn work. I would often refer them to a specialized newborn photographer thinking that is what they wanted…until finally someone said ‘no, we want you…we want you to do exactly what you do with our family sessions…just add baby’. It was then that a light bulb clicked and it dawned on me that my preference of lifestyle photography really had no limitations and crossed all genres. Slowly, I began to take on newborn sessions and did just that…captured everyday emotions and interactions (along with the sweet details that will someday grow and fade) all in the comfort of my clients own home. Just me, my camera, you and your life along with the little loves that make it so breathtaking. I get to watch mommies cry as they just endlessly stare into their babies eyes, and watch daddy’s melt (some shed a tear or two) snuggling their newborn. I see little boys and girls transition and learn to welcome a sibling and capture families truly bonding in the earliest days of their journey. It’s quite remarkable…and it’s not always perfect…and that makes it perfect.
